Throughout the history of the Catholic Church a sacrament has been defined as: “a visible sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace.”
Within these words we hear three important and distinct statements:
- A visible sign: An action performed by a priest or deacon as in Baptism when the water is poured over the child’s or adult’s head.
- Instituted by Christ: Jesus instructed His followers through the church to offer the seven sacraments to His followers. The sacraments have been passed down through the centuries to all the followers of Jesus.
- To give grace: Grace is a free gift from God once we have given our lives to Him and receive Him in the sacraments our lives are filled with a special grace from God.
The Parents as registered parishioners of Notre Dame de la Mer parish may schedule the baptism of an infant or a child to six years of age by calling the parish office. (609-522-2709)
The parents (and godparents if possible) need to attend a baptismal preparation class on a scheduled Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Parish Office. The dates of these classes are listed in the parish bulletin and on a separate page of this website. The classes are held four to five times a year. For scheduling purposes please think ahead for the baptismal class and the date of your child’s baptism. As you prepare for the birth of your child with a new room and other items also prepare for the faith of your child by attending these classes and preparing for the sacrament of baptism before your child is born.
Baptisms are celebrated after the 10:30 a.m. Mass on the fourth Sunday of each month at St. Ann Church. Baptisms are also celebrated on the second Sunday of March, June, September and December during the 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Ann Church. You may call the office to see if the church is available for a priest who is a family friend to baptize your child at your home parish. Private baptisms are not scheduled with your parish priests. Any questions about Baptism should be directed to Nick Danze at the Parish Office at 609-522-2709.
